David Roy and Jason Kluver top field on tough bite

River Kings: David Roy and Jason Kluver Edge 2015 Classic Champs for Win on St. Lawrence River

The third qualifier for Renegade Bass was held on July 23, 2016 on the St. Lawrence River out of Morrisburg, Ontario. The dock talk in the morning was almost exclusively about how tough the river was fishing, with many teams claiming they would consider the day a success if they could boat a limit of 5 fish.

The St. Lawrence River is known for its mega-sized smallmouth bass, and usually surrenders big limits. The last qualifier out of Morrisburg coughed up 18 limits over 20 pounds, and teams needed over 16 pounds just to crack the top 40. This year’s event was a different story altogether. While 7 teams managed to crack the 20 pound mark, a 16 pound bag landed you inside the top 20 for the day and 18.63 scored a top ten check.

At the conclusion of the weigh in, the newly formed team of David Roy (2014 team of the year and Classic champion) and Jason Kluver claimed the title with 23.73 pounds, narrowly beating out last year’s Classic Champions David Chong and Doug Brownridge, who brought 23.40 pounds to the scales. Roy and Kluver’s limit included the second largest bass weighed in, tipping the scales at 5.38 pounds.

Heading into the final qualifier, Chong and Brownridge have a sizeable lead in the Team of the Year race with a nearly 6 pound cushion on the second place team of Roy and Kluver.

At the conclusion of the weigh-in for Q3, as is customary in Renegade Bass, the water body that will play host to this year’s Classic was drawn. With new rules established this year for eligible Class water bodies, four lakes (Big Rideau, Newboro, Dog/Cranberry, and Mississippi) were eligible for the draw. It was determined that Seeley’s Bay will host the Classic on Dog/Cranberry/Whitefish lakes on September 10 and 11. Up for grabs will be a $60,000 Ranger Boats and Evinrude BRP motor package, fully rigged with Lowrance electronics, Power Poles and a Motorguide electric motor. This will be the first Classic held in Seeley’s Bay.

Up next is qualifier four on Lake St. Francis out of Cornwall on August 20. Weigh-in will be at 4 p.m. at Marina 200 behind the Cornwall Civic Centre.
